The history of the generic names is reviewed, and type species found to be the following: <i>Strophidon</i> (type species <i>Strophidon longicaudata</i> McClelland); <i>Lycodontis (Strophidon literata McClelland)</i>; <i>Siderea</i> (<i>Muraena siderea</i> Richardson); <i>Thyrsoidea</i> (<i>Muraena thyrsoidea</i> Richardson); and <i>Pseudechidna</i> (<i>Muraena brummeri</i> Bleeker). Brief diagnoses are given for genera as currently applied.
