- Caracterización de la pesquería histórica española de red de enmalle a la deriva dirigida al pez espada en el estrecho de Gibraltar entre los años 1988 y 1992. Efectos y patrones temporales en las poblaciones de grandes tiburones pelágicos
- Abstract
- The Gibraltar Strait´s swordfish fishery catched by drift gill net was exploited by Spanish fleet until 1994. The aim of this study was to describe the mentioned fishery: the fleet and the effort; and the composition of the landings, focusing on pelagic sharks and the temporal patterns which they were affected. The available data come from both biological sampling in Algecira’s port as well as from onboard observations from the spanish drif gill net fleet made by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography Programme between 1988 and 1992 The fishery had a defined character which followed the swordfish’s migrations patterns: between april and june the fleet fished in atlantic waters, while between july and october fished in the Mediterranean Sea. The fishing effort was concentrated between 1989 and 1990. Swordfish was the most important fish in the landings, and sharks were the most abundant taxonomical group of the bycatch. The most plentiful species were: shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), bigeye thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus) and blue shark (Prionace glauca); for which were found temporal patterns (interanual and seasonal).
