Diagnostic characters of species of the genus <i>Lyconus</i>, were established from collections of fry and adults of this genus of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. The number of abdominal andcaudal vertebrae and the rays in the unpaired and pectoral fins can be used in the diagnosis of larvae of the genus <i>Lyconus</i> to the species level.
