Eggs were obtained from spawners reared in a tank at the Marine Science Museum, Tokai University. The eggs were demersal and elongate ovoidal n shape, measuring 1.27 - 1.32 mm x 0.61 - 0.64 mm in diameter, and with one large (0.16 - 0.18 mm), one medium sized (0.07 - 0.08 mm) and about thirty small oil globule (0.01 - 0.02 mm).Hatching took place over a period of four to six days after spawning at water temperatures of 26.1 - 28.0°C. The newly hatched prolarvae measured 3.15 - 3.43 mm in total length and possessed 27 (5 + 22) myomeres and an oil globule (0.05 - 0.08 mm) in the oval shaped yolk (0.24 - 0.30 mm x 0.19 - 0.24 mm); the mouth and anus were open. Absorption of the yolk was completed 6 days after hatching. Larvae were successively fed rotifers, Altemia nauplii, fish egg and chopped meat and about 250 larvae were raised for about a year up to the immature stage.
