In the spring period, small cell size of diatoms predominate, when the concentrations of elements of mineral nutrition are high, and the light fluxes are far below the maxima (R-strategists). At the end of the spring-early summer the main role is played by coccolithophores, which are tolerant to tolerant to limited content of mineral nutrition elements in the environment (S strategists).
