Title
Genómica poblacional de la almeja mano de león (Nodipecten subnodosus) en las costas de la península de Baja California, México = Population genomics of the lion paw scallop (Nodipecten subnodosus) on the coasts of Baja California, Mexico
Abstract
Lion paw scallop is an economically important bivalve. Although the resource its distributed along the coast of the Baja California peninsula, its overfishing along with mass mortalities have reduced it to the limit it was necessary to implement a time undefined ban on the fishery. Production from aquaculture has been insufficient, and the laboratory generated spat has an altered allele frequency, so it possesses risk to the natural populations. The Restriction Associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq), it’s a very useful technique for genomic evaluation of populations, allowing to recover thousands of markers at relative low cost. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms are an example of this markers, commonly used to assess population structure and genetic divergence. The present study analyzed RAD-seq derived SNP’s to describe five natural populations of lion paw scallops and one laboratory derived spats stock (SEM). A low population structure was observed amongst the wild samples. Genetic components analysis (admixture) and Discriminant Principal Components Analysis (DPCA) indicate a unique group amongst wild samples. Artificial population (SEM) presented a genetic diversity similar to the natural populations. However, individuals in this artificial group have a significantly different fixation index (Fis). The admixture and DPCA tests indicate this artificial group is different to the wild populations. These results suggest there is a single population of lion paw scallops around the peninsula, with some populations having a unique demography that affects the Fis but the same genetic components. Laboratory produced spat results in a genetically different composition. This work sets the basis for directed laboratory spat production, for aquaculture but also for resettlement of the natural populations of this economic and ecological resource.
