At that time plants which are now restricted to the tropics had relatives growing near London. The southern English shoreline supported a mangrove, dominated by the Nipa palm, extending along a tranquil coastline and inland along a few large rivers. The landscape was forested with abundant woody climbers twining through the trees. Grasslands, as we know them today, were absent from the scene. The aim of this guide is to facilitate the identification of the various plant fossils which can be found in the London Clay of the London and Hampshire Basins.
