Momenteel gebruikt het Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee de zogenaamde C-POD om deze clicks te registreren. Dit systeem heeft enkele nadelen, zoals de ontoegankelijkheid van de ruwe data alsook een zeker dataverlies bij het verwerken van de gegevens. In het kader van deze masterthesis is een nieuwe applicatie ontwikkeld die deze nadelen wegwerkt met oog op een lange levensduur. Allereerst worden de basisconcepten van geluidsvoorplanting onder water toegelicht. Vervolgens wordt er ook een algemene beschrijving gegeven betre ende de werking van dergelijke systemen. Tot slot wordt er een vergelijking gemaakt met een andere akoestische onderwaterlogger en worden er eisen opgesteld voor het nieuwe systeem. Met een ARM-gebaseerde microcontroller wordt een applicatie ontwikkeld dat continu hoogfrequente signalen kan samplen. Via een discrete fourieranalyse kunnen hoge energiewaarden worden gedetecteerd in de frequentieband waar bruinvisclicks plaatsvinden. Bij een hoge energiewaarde in deze regio wordt de ruwe data weggeschreven naar een SD-kaart in de vorm van een DATA-bestand (.dat). Ook de overeenkomstige timestamps zullen worden weggeschreven naar datzelfde bestand. Via een extern verwerkingsprogramma wordt het DATA-bestand omgezet in WAV-bestanden (.wav) met de overeenkomstige timestamps. Ten slotte wordt de correcte werking van de microcontroller gecontroleerd via een testopstelling. In de testopstelling wordt de casing en de hydrofoon van de C-POD gebruikt. De signalen uit de hydrofoon worden versterkt door middel van een voorlopige versterker en vervolgens verbonden op de ingangen van de microcontroller. Door middel van een akoestische tagger dat onderwater signalen van 69 kHz uitstuurt, wordt nagegaan of de microcontroller deze signalen kan verwerken en wegschrijven.
