The species is redescribed on the basis of new material from hyperbenthic layers in the northern Barents Sea (Arctic Ocean). <i>Smirnovipina</i> gen. nov. is the only member of the Cyclopoida which has a rudimentary 1-segmented antennary exopod as an adult. The new genus is the sistergroup of a taxon comprising <i>Cyclopinoides</i> Lindberg, 1953 and <i>Ginesia</i> Jaume & Boxshall, 1997.
