There is no 'universal' method to solve all of them and ad-hoc considerations play a part in the choice and elaboration of numerical methods. This does not preclude, however, that some basic issues must be considered for each method. They can be combined under the heading of accuracy. Such considerations are certainly not restricted to finite-difference methods. Some examples are given, concerning: wave propagation in hyperbolic systems; representation of flow patterns; parabolic systems; and treatment of boundaries, particularly fixed walls.
