Binnen deze studie werden dagelijkse hoog- en laagwaterstanden gedigitaliseerd voor 10 getijposten in de Zeeschelde, en dit vanaf 1888. Deze data werden gebruikt om jaargemiddelde getijkarakteristieken zoals waterstand, getijvertraging en getijasymmetrie af te leiden. Daarnaast werden jaargemiddelde waardes berekend voor 4 getijposten in de Westerschelde, om op die manier de langjarige evolutie van het volledige Schelde estuarium in beeld te brengen. Lange termijn trends in getijkarakteristieken werden berekend voor twee verschillende deelperiodes, elk met hun eigen morfologische evolutie (inpoldering versus verruiming). In de periode 1888-1969 (voornamelijk gekenmerkt door inpoldering) stijgt het jaargemiddeld hoogwater overal in het estuarium (0.3-1.1 cm/jaar), waarbij de extreme hoogwaters sterker stijgen in het meest opwaartse deel. Het jaargemiddeld laagwater stijgt eveneens in deze periode, maar in hoofdzaak in de zone Vlissingen-Lillo en in beperktere mate (0.1-0.3 cm/jaar). Voor de tijdsgerelateerde parameters is de getijvertraging HW in de zone Vlissingen-Antwerpen sterker afgenomen dan de getijvertraging LW. Dit leidt tot een toename van de getij-asymmetrie in een groot deel van de Beneden-Zeeschelde. In de periode 1970-2017 (gekenmerkt door verruiming) stijgt het jaargemiddeld hoogwater met 0.3-1.4 cm/jaar, waarbij de stijging toeneemt in opwaartse richting. Het jaargemiddeld laagwater daarentegen daalt opwaarts Hansweert, waarbij de daling groter wordt in opwaartse richting. Tenslotte neemt opwaarts Hansweert de getijvertraging LW sterker af dan de getijvertraging HW, wat resulteert in een afname van de getij-asymmetrie over bijna het volledige estuarium.
