The ecological role of the capelin is discussed, as well as its population dynamics. The stock history, its abundance and exploitation is dealt with, together with the history of stock assessment and management. The main aim of the review is to compile and bring to light many not readily available sources of knowledge concerning the Barents Sea capelin stock.
