The cells are saddle shaped with the appendages inserted subapically on the ventral side of the cell. The coiling haptonema measures 2-4 times the length of the flagella when extended. The cells contain two golden brown chloroplasts. The periplast is covered by two types of scale with dimorphic scale faces.
