De studie brengt de langjarige evolutie van het getij in beeld voor het volledige Schelde estuarium over de periode 1888-2017, en dit met speciale aandacht voor de tijdsgerelateerde getijparameters. Langjarige trends in getij worden vervolgens gelinkt aan menselijke ingrepen, en er werd onderzocht of de resulterende morfologische wijzigingen de trends in getij kunnen verklaren.<br>Data-analyse en modelsimulaties tonen aan dat sedimentonttrekkingen in combinatie met vaargeulverruiming en de bijhorende toename in geuldiepte resulteren in een toename van de getijslag. De grote geuldieptetoename in het segment Hansweert-Liefkenshoek (tot 30%) zorgt hierbij voor de grootste toename in getijslag, niet enkel binnen het segment zelf maar ook tot ver opwaarts het estuarium. Daarnaast resulteert een grote toename in geuldiepte in een toename van de celeriteit van het laagwater, en dus een afname van de vloeddominantie en de getij-asymmetrie. Historische inpolderingen langsheen het Schelde estuarium leiden tot een toename van de vloeddominantie en de getij-asymmetrie. Voornamelijk de inpolderingen langsheen het segment Hansweert-Liefkenshoek en Schelle-Dendermonde zijn hierbij belangrijk.
