Phylogenetic analyses based on a partial fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) including all available <i>Africonus</i> species from the Cape Verde Islands placed the new specimens in three groups from the Derrubado bay in the northern part of the island, from the bay of Porto Ferreira, and from the Bay of Ervatao located on the northwest coast. Specimens from the Bay of Ervatao shared an identical haplotype with <i>Africonus borgesi</i> (Trovao, 1979) and hence were assigned to this taxon. Only the first group received statistical support in the phylogenetic analyses; it is here described as <i>Africonus fiadeiroi</i> sp. nov.
