The contribution of temperature, precipitation, erosion and sediment redistribution, as well as the composition of the biota, for the ecosystem's organic carbon (OC) turnover has been examined for many different terrestrial ecosystems. Our understanding of OC storage in marine ecosystems is more fragmented.
