This species differs from most species of the North and South American genus <i><span class=\"tn\" data-taxon-parsed-name=\"Hyalella\"><span class=\"genus\" full-name=\"Hyalella\">Hyalella</span></span></i> in the number of setae on the inner plate of maxilla 1 and maxilla 2, characters it shares with <i><span class=\"tn\" data-taxon-parsed-name=\"Hyalella faxoni\"><span class=\"genus\" full-name=\"Hyalella\">Hyalella</span> <span class=\"species\" full-name=\"faxoni\">faxoni</span></span></i> Stebbing, 1903. Nevertheless, <i><span class=\"tn\" data-taxon-parsed-name=\"Hyalella faxoni\"><span class=\"genus\" full-name=\"Hyalella\">H.</span> <span class=\"species\" full-name=\"faxoni\">faxoni</span></span></i>, from the Volcan Barva in Costa Rica, lacks a dorsal process on pereionites 1 and 2.
