Boomsma & De Vries (1980) en Boomsma et al. (1982) bestudeerden mierengemeenschappen in verschillende successiestadia van een duinecosysteem in de Hollandse duinen. Wij spitsten ons toe op de distributie van mieren in de zgn. grijze duinen aan de westkust: mosduinen met een aanzienlijk percentage Groot duinsterretje (<i>Tortula ruralis</i> subsp. <i>ruraliformi</i>) of Duinklauwtjesmos (<i>Hypnum cupressiforme</i>), al dan niet met kruidachtige planten zoals Geel walstro (<i>Galium verum</i>), Kalkbedstro (<i>Asperula cynanchica</i>) en Grote tijm (<i>Thymus pulegioides</i>).
