It also strengthens input for another WP6 Objective (6.4): ‘to support research and development of marine assessments, through availability of information from ocean data and combination with model data to feed decision-support systems.' Priority ecosystem Essential Ocean Variables (eEOVs) have been identified in this report. These were proposed through a process of definition and discussion with internationally renowned marine scientists and ocean modelers. Knowledge of the priority eEOVs and understanding the existing adequacy of the observing system elements used to monitor them contributes to the improved development of ocean information products that are useful to combat threats to ocean ecosystems and to society from changes in the ocean environment. This report provides a solid starting point from which the global ocean observing community of scientists and modelers can begin and/or strengthen efforts for sustained monitoring of eEOVs. Ultimately, ongoing observations of eEOVs and subsequent storage and access to data will provide the most relevant and ‘essential’ information useful to policy and decision-makers for best practice management of the marine ecosystems. GEOWOW’s efforts to improve data discovery, interoperability, computation, and information display infrastructures, based on the existing GEOSS.
