Deze ingrijpende veranderingen in de watersystemen hadden tot gevolg dat de estuariene gradiënten, met haar karakteristieke natuurwaarden, zeldzaam zijn geworden. Er wordt momenteel overwogen om het Haringvliet weer onder beperkte getijdeninvloed te laten komen.
