Schelde) komen voor in kustgebieden wereldwijd. Het economisch en ecologisch belang ervan hangt sterk af van de vorm en de ligging van de bodem, die bepaald wordt door het samenspel tussen beweging van water en zand. Deze bodem blijkt gevoelig te zijn aan veranderingen in externe omstandigheden, door natuurlijke evoluties en menselijke ingrepen (zeespiegelstijging, vaargeulverruiming, onderhoudsbaggerwerken, zandwinning, in- en ontpoldering, gecontroleerde overstromingsgebieden,...). Voor het beheer van getijdesystemen is het noodzakelijk om deze gevoeligheid te kunnen voorspellen. Hiervoor zijn complexe, proces-gebaseerde modellen beschikbaar. Door de grote rekentijd en een omvangrijke, moeilijk te analyseren modeluitvoer zijn grondige gevoeligheidsstudies en inzicht opdoen in de maatgevende fysische processen niet eenvoudig. Lange-termijnvoorspellingen zijn enkel mogelijk met een kunstgreep (een morfologische versnellingsfactor). Daarom worden aanvullend geïdealiseerde modellen ontwikkeld. Deze modellen laten toe om direct de evenwichtsbodems te berekenen, zonder toepassing van een tijdstap-procedure. Ook al komen ze bijna nooit voor, toch geven evenwichtsbodems trends aan waarnaar de bodem van nature wil evolueren.
