The aim of this study was to revalidate O. occidentalis from the Brazilian coast based on morphological and molecular data (16S gene), and to provide a redescription, illustrations and a comparison with congeners. As expected, <i>O. occidentalis</i> is close to <i>O. alphaerostris</i> but can be separated by molecular data, the proportional size of the second article of the antennular peduncle in relation to the third article (3–4 times as long as the former, and 2–2.5 times as long as the latter), and the size of the scaphocerite (not reaching the distal part of the second article of the antennular peduncle in O. occidentalis, while always reaching or sometimes overreaching the distal part of the second article of the antennular peduncle in <i>O. alphaerostris</i>).
