Deze kreeftachtige wist zich via transport in ballastwater van schepen te vestigen in Europa, waarvan de eerste melding dateert van 1916. In 1952 werd de soort voor het eerst bij ons waargenomen in de Zeeschelde. Later, in de jaren ‘60, kwamen ook meldingen binnen vanuit de Oostendse Spuikom. De soort gedijt zowel in zoute als brakke wateren en kan incompetitie treden met inheemse planktonsoorten.
