Er zijn echter aanwijzingen dat de Vikingen deze soort – intentioneel als voedsel of toevallig in het water in het ruim – al in de 13e eeuw naar Europa brachten. Door zijn opportunistisch karakter kan de soort in diverse omgevingen overleven, wat zijn grote verspreiding verklaart. Het is een grote schelpensoort (tot 15 cm) die, wanneer hij in grote aantallen aanwezig is, de omgeving sterk kan beïnvloeden.
