De soort kwam oorspronkelijk voor in de Middellandse Zee en is ongewild in onze streken terechtgekomen samen met het transport van mosselen. De soort werd voor het eerst in België waargenomen in 1950 in mosselen die vanuit Nederland naar de Oostendse Spuikom getransporteerd waren. Niet veel later was de parasiet langs de hele Belgische Oostkust te vinden.
