Het is een opportunistische soort die zich heel snel kan verspreiden door zich vast te hechten op scheepsrompen. Het kelpwier werd in 1971 in de Middellandse Zee geïntroduceerd via de oesterkweek en werd 12 jaar later naar Bretagne overgebracht in het kader van experimentele kweekculturen, waar het ook buiten deze culturen in staat bleek zich voort te planten. Vaak vormt wakame dense kolonies, waardoor de soort in competitie treedt met inheemse soorten voor beschikbare ruimte en licht, en zo de inheemse fauna en flora kan wegconcurreren.
