- Norwegian red sea cucumber (Parastichopus tremulus) fishery and aquaculture north of 60°N latitude: Feasible or fictional?
- Abstract
- The high demand for sea cucumbers from the Asian market has led to the interest in new species from the North Atlantic. The Norwegian red sea cucumber, Parastichopus tremulus, is one potential species, that has yet to be exploited or cultured. The red sea cucumber is distributed along the entire Norwegian coast, and seems to be abundant north of 60°N. The populationis believed to be commercially exploitable, but the lack of knowledge on its life history traits and population structurenecessitates more biological investigations before this can be confirmed. Aquaculture of the species is considered, but for thisto succeed knowledge about reproduction and early life stages needs to be advanced. In this paper we summarise some of theknowledge currently available for P. tremulus, present some recent advances from reproduction studies, and discuss prospectsfor utilising this species, both through a fishery and aquaculture.
