There are many favorable studies on sperm cryopreservation but oocytes are still under research as no successful results have been sustainably obtained for this type of cells. The preservation of both maternal and paternal gametes separately would provide a reliable source of genetic material for their application to conservation, aquaculture and fundamental research. Unfortunately to date, it has not been possible to cryopreserve eggs from marine organisms.
