Gezien de complexiteit van het watersysteem en de interactie met aanpalende bekkens in Wallonië en Noord-Frankrijk, het model werd verbeterd om de kanalen die het Scheldestroomgebied met aanpalende stroomgebieden verbinden en een aantal rivieren uit deze aanpalende bekkens alsook te modelleren. Het gemodelleerde gebied beslaat zo bijna 49 500 km².<br>De vroegere versie van het waterbalansmodel gebruikte gemeten debiettijdreeksen voor de Samber, de Maas, het Albertkanaal en de Zuid-Willemsvaart. Bijgevolg waren de hydrologie en interactie van het Scheldestroomgebied met het Maasbekken niet gemodelleerd. De nieuwe versie van het waterallocatiemodel in MIKE HYDRO Basin modelleert het hydrologische wateraanbod van het Maasbekken en de verdeling van de Maas te Monsin waarvan het Albertkanaal en de Kempische kanalen profiteren.<br>Rekening houdend met de regionale schaal van het model, de onzekerheid van sommige invoerinformatie, de betrouwbaarheid van de metingen bij lage afvoeren en het belang van de droge periodes kan gesteld worden dat het model er behoorlijk goed in slaagt de huidige situatie te simuleren. Het geactualiseerde waterbalansmodel is gedetailleerder en modelleert de situatie in Noord Frankrijk en in het Maas bekken (en zijn interactie met de Schelde) correct. Met dit model kunnen langdurige simulaties worden uitgevoerd en de resultaten daarvan kunnen worden geanalyseerd met behulp van een op maat ontwikkelde post processing tool. Er kan geconcludeerd worden dat dit model geschikt is voor het evalueren van analyses van de huidige toestand op regionale schaal en om de impact van klimaatveranderingen op de waterbalans van het Scheldebekken te begroten.<br>Uit de analyse van de simulatie tussen 1967 tot en met 2013 (op basis van de huidige watervraag) blijkt dat er voor nagenoeg alle gebruikers aan de waterbehoefte voldaan kan worden. Deze resultaten bevestigen de resultaten van het eerste waterbalansbalansmodel (bestek WL-12-032). Langs enkele waterwegen komen er wel tekorten voor, waaronder ook een aantal economisch belangrijke (Kanaal Gent-Terneuzen, Albertkanaal, Kanaal Schelde-Duinkerke). Gedurende een maand blijven deze tekorten echter, op een paar uitzonderingen na, maximum enkele opeenvolgende dagen. Deze duiden niettemin aan de knelpunten in het watersysteem.
