De uitgevoerde monitoring betreft de continue metingen van waterstand, debiet, stroming, saliniteit en sedimentconcentratie, alsook vaarten (halftij-eb en 13-uursmetingen), golfmetingen en periodieke metingen. Het jaar 2020 wordt in de maanden februari en maart gekenmerkt door sterk verhoogde bovenafvoer richting Schelde estuarium. Te Schelle is de totale berekende bovenafvoer in de maand maart abnormaal hoog. De periode februari-maart wordt daarnaast gekenmerkt door het voorkomen van een aantal stormvloeden. Tijdens storm Ciara overschrijden drie opeenvolgende hoogwaters de stormtijdrempel (6,6 mTAW), met in de namiddag van 10 februari een maximale hoogwaterstand van 6,91 mTAW te Antwerpen. Met deze waterstand is een retourperiode van 1,3 jaar geassocieerd. Vanaf april tot en met september 2020 breekt een droge periode aan met sterk verlaagde bovenafvoer richting Schelde estuarium. Waar het relatieve aandeel bovenafvoer Rupel versus Boven-Zeeschelde in de wintermaanden ongeveer gelijk is, daalt dit voor de Boven-Zeeschelde gedurende de droge periode tot slechts 15% in de maand september. De lage bovenafvoer in de periode april-september resulteert in een progressieve toename van het zoutgehalte in het estuarium, en hogere sedimentconcentraties in het opwaarts deel van de Boven-Zeeschelde. Voor het station Prosperpolder worden in de zomer van 2020 zoutgehaltes geregistreerd tot 21 PSU, wat tot de hoogste waarnemingen behoort sinds het begin van de metingen in 2003. Wat betreft de sedimentconcentraties worden ter hoogte van het station Weert waarden van meer dan 1 g/l geregistreerd nabij het oppervlak. Eind september is er dan voor de eerste keer sinds het begin van de droge periode weer een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid bovenafvoer. Dit resulteert in een onmiddellijke afname van het zoutgehalte over het volledige estuarium. Daarnaast is er voor de meest opwaartse stations in de Boven-Zeeschelde (Melle en Schellebelle) ook een duidelijke daling in sedimentconcentratie. Voor het meer afwaartse station Weert blijft de sedimentconcentratie echter hoog tot op het einde van het jaar.
