De grootste schade trad op in Wallonië, maar ook in Vlaanderen werden op de Maas, Demer en in het systeem Zenne- Zeekanaal hoge piekafvoeren opgetekend. De piekafvoeren op de Maas waren de hoogste sinds het begin van de metingen in 1911. In het opwaartse deel van de bevaarbare Demer was de retourperiode van de afvoer ongeveer 34 jaar en werden noodmaatregelen uitgevoerd bij het bereiken van de maximale bergingscapaciteit van de opwaartse wachtbekkens. Gedurende de gebeurtenissen zorgde het HIC voor metingen, voorspellingen en interpretaties via de hoogwaterberichtgeving en op waterinfo.be. De Vlaamse Waterweg nam alle mogelijk maatregelen om het water zo vlot mogelijk af te voeren. In dit rapport worden de belangrijkste metingen, voorspellingen en maatregelen op het terrein op een rijtje gezet. De inspanningen die de afgelopen jaren al geleverd werden om de schade door overstromingen langs de Vlaamse waterwegen in kaart te brengen (meetnet HIC, voorspellingsmodellen HIC) en te minimaliseren (bv. Maaswerken, Sigmaplan) wierpen hun vruchten af. Deze inspanning moet volgehouden worden om ook in de toekomst- en dus rekening houdende met klimaatverandering- de schade bij natuurrampen zo minimaal mogelijk te houden.
