- Abstract
- The diatom Odontella sinensis occurred only in the Indo-Pacific region but made the trip to Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. More than likely, this movement occurred via the ballast water of ships. Afterwards, it expanded its habitat locally by transport with the prevailing sea current. In less than ten years, this diatom spread throughout European waters. It was first spotted on the Belgian coast in 1904. In the meantime, it has become a common species that occupies a permanent place in marine plankton.
