Title

Melita nitida

Abstract

The amphipod Melita nitida originates from the east and west coasts of North America. Through shipping (on ship hulls or in ballast water) it reached Europe. Here, it was spotted for the first time in the Dutch Western Scheldt in 1998. In 2003, this non-indigenous amphipod was observed for the first time in Belgium, in the Sea Scheldt near Doel. Remarkable is that this amphipod is mainly found underneath Japanese oysters Crassostrea gigas and stones; places that are less populated by native amphipods.
