It is a bastard or hybrid of the European native small cordgrass <i>S. maritima</i> and the North American smooth cordgrass <i>S. alterniflora</i>. At the time, common cordgrass was planted for land reclamation and stabilization of the sediment. It was first observed in Belgium in 1936. However, the species appeared very invasive and created a shift in mudflat vegetations. The result was a reduction in the natural value of this rare coastal habitat.
