Due to their higher photosynthetic efficiency, higher biomass production, and faster growth rate, they have been suggested as very good candidates for biofuel production. High lipid content and fast growth rate are the major criteria for good candidate algal strains. Also, the algae should not be too difficult to harvest and must have a suitable and cost-effective cultivation system. Microalgae, like any other living organism, synthesize lipids which they use to maintain the integrity of their cells.
