Scientific research and policy-making work jointly to conceive effective measures that can at least mitigate a phenomenon seemingly without solutions. The growing public concerns about the consequences of plastics, and especially microplastics, in the marine environment are encouraging for a further increase in stakeholders. However, although plastic is now considered as a global issue by scientific community, decision-makers, industry, and civil society, the health of our oceans and seas is getting worse and worse. Replacing plastic with less impacting materials does not seem a feasible solution in the immediate future.
