Nineteen species are described as new. One new genus <i>Jarobella</i> and one new subgenus <i>Pseudocythere</i> (<i>Plenocythere<i/>) are proposed. Characteristic species and sediment parameters of the five ostracod assemblages are listed. Studies of the distribution patterns of individual species indicate that the influence of substrate (sediments) on ostracod distribution is not as obvious as suggested by previous work. Many species display a wide tolerance of variations in sediment texture, grain size, and sorting. Both the Southland Current and a post-glacial rise in sea level appear to have been responsible for the anomalous distribution of the relict population.
