The material reported on comes from the collections of the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute, Auckland University Zoology Department, Victoria University Zoology Department and Otago University Zoology Department; also all previous records from the area are included in distribution maps. All genera in the Aetideidae are defined and a list of their species provided even though no examples of some have been recorded from the south-west Pacific. Species of the following genera are described and figured and their distributions mapped in the south-west Pacific: <i>Aetideus</i>, <i>Aetideopsis</i>, <i>Bradyidius</i>, <i>Chiridius</i>, <i>Chirundina</i>, <i>Comantenna</i>, <i>Crassantenna</i>, <i>Euchirella</i>, <i>Gaetanus</i>, <i>Gaidius</i>, <i>Lutamator</i>, <i>Pseudeuchaeta</i>, <i>Pseudochirella</i>, <i>Pseudotharybis</i>, <i>Sursamucro</i>, <i>Undeuchaera</i>, and <i>Valdiviella</i>.
