- Abstract
- Mollusks have a solid calcareous shell with exceptional optical, mechanical, magnetic, osteogenic, and osteoinductive properties that are attractive for sciences such as biomedicine. The biomineralization of these organisms is a deposition process of inorganic matter controlled by a complex organic matrix (proteins, chitin, and polysaccharides). The matrix proteins are the main regulators of the process (nucleation, growth, polymorphisms) and to date, a basic toolkit of proteins responsible for the biomineralization of mollusks have not been described. However, the presence of different microstructures in the layers: nacreous and prismatic in the most studied classes of mollusks (for example columnar nacre in gastropods and plate-shaped in bivalves), suggests the presence of a basic taxon-specifictoolkit. The objective of this work is to identify the basic toolkit of proteins that mediates the formation of the shell of mollusks, bivalves, and gastropods. To do this, a database with organic matrix proteins from different species of bivalves and gastropods was created, whichwere characterized using bioinformatics tools and grouped using Venn diagrams and string diagrams. Also, cladograms were performed with the most representative proteins from the database. The databases were made up of nearly 1,500 proteins, from 32 species of gastropods and 37 of bivalves, of which many presented posttranslational modifications; suggesting that proteins are extracellular and migrate to the site of shell formation. It was not possible to determine a possible protein basic toolkit of shell matrix proteins for mollusks, however, it was found common domains in the shell matrix proteins from bivalves and gastropods, being the most representative domains: C1q, Carbonic anhydrase, ChtBD2, EGF, KU, and vWA, also the motif Coiled-coil region and Efh, and the low complexity regions(LCR) and transmembranal regions (TR). No relationship was determined between the shell matrix proteins and the microstructure of their shell due to the lack of information.
