In late spring and summer, herring that had migrated to the Norwegian Sea fed primarily on Calanus finmarchicus, copepodid stage IV and older. In colder waters e.g., those influenced by the East Icelandic Current, C. hyperboreus was important in the diet. By July and August, a wide variety of prey organisms was found in the stomachs of herring caught in the central Norwegian Sea and on the Norwegian continental shelf. In the western part of the Norwegian Sea, amphipods, Themisto spp., were important prey.

The herring showed size-selective feeding on copepodid stages of C. finmarchicus and C. hyperboreus. Larger prey, such as krill and amphipods, were preyed upon regardless of their size. The average weight of food in the stomach was generally higher in the mixed Atlantic/Arctic and Arctic waters, which were also characterized by higher zooplankton biomass.
","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"Food and feeding conditions of Norwegian spring-spawning herring (Clupea harengus) through its feeding migrations","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-06-04 01:31:46.387105","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":"feeding ecology, herring","OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2000,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2022-11-16","DateCreate":"2022-11-16","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:000089933800006","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":1,"DOI":"10.1006/jmsc.2000.0573"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":359240,"PubliDate":2000,"Pagination":"843-857","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"57","Issue":"4","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":44710,"SerRR":"ICES Journal of Marine Science.
