- Title
- Current status of diversity of marine microplankton from Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve, Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago
- Abstract
- Microplankton (20–200 μm) is a functional group of organisms sharing an ecological function. The present work is a compilation of microplankton diversity from the eastern waters of Great Nicobar Island based on existing literature and our present research. One hundred and thirty-one microplankton species from the coastal and offshore waters of Great Nicobar Island belonging to four phyla, eight classes, 16 orders, 45 families and 67 genera have been reported in the present work. One hundred and nineteen species were recorded from the nearshore waters of the island (including the current study), while 21 species were recorded offshore in the Andaman Sea. The numerical abundance was highest in the southern region of the study area compared to other regions, while species richness was more along the north-eastern coast of Great Nicobar Island. There are gap areas pertaining to certain taxa which need to be addressed in future studies.
