Title
Contribution à l’inventaire de la macrofaune marine en baie de Marennes-Oléron
Abstract
The last available checklist of the marine fauna of the Pertuis Charentais Sea by de Montaudouin & Sauriau (2000) reported the occurrence of 858 macrofauna species among which 332 are located within the Marennes-Oléron Bay. However, large gaps of knowledge have been highlighted due to lowsampling effort on hard substrata fauna. A new synopsis of available benthic surveys realized in the Marennes-Oléron Bay for more than twenty five years contributes to fill these gaps. At least, 139 species are newly reported among which 35 are also new reports for the Pertuis Charentais Sea. Concerning benthic habitats, 2/3 of the newly reported species live on hard substrata. According to a cladistic classification, there are 6 Demospongiae, 1 Porifera Calcarea, 14 Cnidaria, 1 Ctenophora, 1 Platyhelminthes, 4 Nemertina, 47 Mollusca among which 3 Polyplacophora, 23 Gastropoda, 4 Cephalopoda and 17 Bivalvia, 1 Sipuncula, 17 Annelida Polychaeta, 3 Bryozoa, 34 Euarthropoda among which 2 Maxillopoda, 31 Malacostraca and 1 Hexapoda Collembola, 2 Echinodermata and 9 Chordata. The total number of marine macrofauna species in the Marennes-Oléron Bay is estimated to be 471 but this figure is probably underestimated. Unbiased species-richness estimates are expected from new benthic surveys focussed on both hard substrata of the bay and phyla such as Porifera, Cnidaria Hydrozoa, Bryozoa, Pycnogonids and Urochordata.
