It was initially described as a species of <i>Ceratocorys</i> F.Stein, then transferred to <i>Gonyaulax</i> Diesing, and finally to its own genus, <i>Acanthogonyaulax</i>. Discrepancies in the observations of its plate pattern were responsible for these changes.
