Title
Population structure and reproductive biology of the mysid Rhopalophthalmus hastatus Hanamura, Murano & Man, 2011 (Crustacea: Mysida) in the Songkhla Lagoon System, Southern Thailand
Abstract
The mysid Rhopalophthalmus hastatus Hanamura et al. (Zootaxa 2788:1–37, 2011) is considered one of the tropical mysid inhabiting Malaysia and Thailand. Their occurrence is one of the main factors determining the aquatic ecosystem’s food chain. This study investigated the seasonal abundance and reproductive traits of R. hastatus in Thale Sap and Thale Sap Songkhla, Songkhla Lagoon System, southern Thailand, from June 2017 to June 2019. The mean density of this mysid was higher in Thale Sap Songkhla (80.69 ± 39.37 ind. 100 m−2) compared to Thale Sap (45.76 ± 21.39 ind. 100 m−2). Juveniles were the most predominant in the whole population from the two lagoons, and females were more predominant than males in the sex ratio. The proportion of the brooding females differed statistically; females with the nauplioid stage were the most dominant (44.25%) among the brooding females. The brood size did not differ statistically, with the maximum brood size of 17. The mean diameter of the embryo was 0.63 ± 0.012 mm, nauplioid length was 1.43 ± 0.02 mm, and post-nauplioid length was 1.79 ± 0.03 mm. The brood size and the brood length were statistically correlated with the female’s body length.
