Su sabor y textura es altamente demandada en el mercado mundial, el que ha llevado al desarrollo de su cultivo masivo en el litoral peruano, soportando los bancos naturales una intensa y continua presión de captura y traslado de semillas. Esta situación afecta la variabilidad genética entre las poblaciones de A. purpuratus, debido a la reducción de su densidad en el medio natural y al constante flujo genético mediado por el hombre. Por esta razón, el objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar la diversidad y estructura genético poblacional de los bancos naturales de A. purpuratus, del litoral peruano. Para ello, 327 organismos correspondientes a 11 bancos naturales, fueron analizados mediante los microsatélites APPE13, APPE17, APPE23, APPE25.1 y APUR03. Todas las poblaciones de los bancos naturales presentaron alta diversidad genética (> 50%). Sechura y Paracas presentaron los mayores valores de riqueza alélica (11.22 y 10.76, respectivamente), atribuida al traslado de semillas con fines de producción y repoblamiento, y Laguna Grande presentó el mayor valor de heterocigosidad (0.89), lo cual permitiría deducir que se trata de un banco natural virgen. Así mismo, mediante el análisis bayesiano (STRUCTURE) y de componentes principales discriminante (DAPC), se demostró que Samanco se distingue claramente del resto, indicando que se trata de una población genéticamente homogénea, además, se logró determinar que Independencia y Chimus presentan similitud entre sus frecuencias alélicas. Por otro lado, los valores de análisis de varianza molecular (AMOVA) y FST, indican que la mayor varianza molecular (1,902) y diferenciación genética (0,094, p= 0,001) se encuentra dentro de los individuos.
