These formations were deposited in a lake formed by Upper Rhine Graben rifting, in waters of variable but generally low salinities. The taxa are habitually assigned to the genus Hydrobia, but do not conform to the current narrow neozoological concept of this genus and are preliminarily listed as Hydrobia. Species taxa in this group may partly even belong to the family Cochliopidae, in which strongly convergent shell forms occur. The nomenclature at the species level is utterly confused, as 1) names introduced early byFaujas (1806) and widely used are nomenclaturally unavailable, 2) three other early names (Helix caerulescens Gmelin, 1791,Helicites gregarius Schlotheim, 1820 and H. paludinarius Schlotheim, 1820) based on specimens from the Rüssingen and Wiesbaden formations have been overlooked, 3) Hydrobia elongata (Faujas)” of authors is a misidentified species. This paper clarifies the identities and synonymies of the more frequent hydrobioid species described from the Rüssingen and Wiesbaden formations, describes the available type material and provides preliminary definitions of the taxa. The following taxa are recognized: Hydrobia nannacus n.sp. (syn. H. aturensis Auct., non Noulet, 1854 part); “H.”aturensis Noulet, 1854 (new synonyms elongata Sandberger, 1859,sandbergeri Deshayes, 1862,procera Wenz, 1913,procerula Wenz, 1925); “H.”caerulescens (Gmelin, 1791); “H.”paludinaria (Scholotheim, 1820) with the synonym elongata Bronn, 1829; “H.”gregaria (Schlotheim, 1820) with the synonym sinflata Bronn, 1837,intermedia A.Braun, 1851,wenzi Boettger, 1908,carinulata Wenz, 1913,bicarinata Wenz, 1913,bicarinulata Wenz in Zilch, 1987;“Hydrobia” inflata (Pusch, 1837) with the synonyms amplificata Thomä, 1845,elongata Faujas in Eichwald, 1853,depressa Ludwig, 1855,ampullacea Ludwig, 1855, and angustior Dollfus, 1912. The name Paludina inflata Pusch, 1837 is declared anomen protectum, and the name Paludina inflata Bronn, 1837 anomen oblitum.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"Zur Identität und Synonymie der häufigeren \"Hydrobien“ der Rüssingen-Formation (Inflata-Schichten) und Wiesbaden-Formation (Hydrobien-Schichten) (Miozän, Mainzer Becken) (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia: Rissooidea)","OrigTitleLangCode":"nl","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"dut","OrigTitleLangID":41,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-06-12 01:32:19.344933","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":"type specimens, morphometrics, Early Miocene, Mainz Basin","OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2008,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2023-10-05","DateCreate":"2023-10-02","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":null,"VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1007/bf03055278"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":367522,"PubliDate":2008,"Pagination":"229-266","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"88","Issue":"2","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":43815,"SerRR":"Senckenbergiana Lethaea.
