Many shells belong either to <i>Macoma praetenuis</i> (WOODWARD ex LEATHES' MSS, 1833) or to <i>M. obliqua</i> (SOWERBY, 1817), except those from borings at Vlissingen and Biggekerke, where the deposits containing the shells are now known to be Eemian/Holocene. Diagnostic characters of the <i>Macoma</i> shells are discussed. Consequently, when correlating the marine sequencese of the Netherlands and English (East Anglian Crag) Lower Pleistocene, we may now dismiss the supposedoccurrence of a 'Weybournian' horizon in the uppermost marine 'Icenian' of the Netherlands.
