Title
L’exploitation des ressources halieutiques par les ibéromaurusiens de la région des Babors (Paléolithique supérieur, Algérie): apport du site de Taza 1
Abstract
The Taza 1 cave, located on the northeast coast of Algeria, includes two Iberomaurusian layers (Upper Paleolithic) dated between 22 and 16 ka cal BP. The archaeozoological analysis carried out on the aquatic faunal remains has delivered unprecedented results on acquisition and exploitation strategies of these species which constituted a food source complementary to that of terrestrial resources, in particular the marine malacofauna. This one was also exploited to a lesser extent as a raw material for the manufacture of ornament elements. The consumed species are mainly limpets (Patellidae) and top-shells (Trochidae), which increase in the upper layer dated from the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (17/16 ka cal BP). This layer marks a change in the Iberomaurusians subsistence behavior with an increase and diversification of marine resources (molluscs, fish and probably crustaceans).
