The Papua New Guinean specimens were collected from the Madang Province (N-coastal region of PNG) and Motupore Island (S-coastal region of PNG). The Indonesian specimens were collected during the <i>Snellius-II</i> oceanographic expedition in the Banda and Flores Sea (eastern part of Indonesia). 19 species where described, including species of the genera <i>Anadyomene, Boergesenia, Boodlea, Dictyosphaeria, Microdictyon, Phyllodictyon, Struvea, Valonia</i> and <i>Ventricaria</i>. Four new species were recorded for the region: <i>Microdictyon okamurae (Banda and Flores Sea); Microdictyon palmeri, Struvea gardineri</i> (Madang Province); and <i>Dictyosphaeria ocellata</i> (Motupore Island). Ultrastructural and molecular evidence show that neither the Siphonocladales nor the Cladophorales are monophyletic, and that there is no reason to seperate both orders (van den Hoek 1982, Olsen-Stojkovich 1986, Bakker et al. 1994). Life history and molecular evidence show the genera <i>Phyllodictyon</i> and <i>Boodlea</i> to be very closely related. Some authors even consider <i>Phyllodictyon</i> and <i>Boollea congeneric</i> (Egerod 1975). The question could then be asked if a morphological continuum existed between the two genera. 35 specimens of <i>Boodlea composita, Phyllodictyon anasto- mosans</i> were examined using classical and novel characters. <i>Struvea ele- gans</i> and <i>Struvea gardineri</i> were used as outgroups. A principal component analysis and a Mann- Witney U test were used to analyse the data. A morphological continuurn between the <i>Boodlea composita</i>-cluster and the <i>Phyllodictyon anastomosans</i>-cluster was observed from the ordination, supporting the hypothesis that both species may be conspecific.
