Samples of two stations along the Belgian coast are discussed. In one of them, there was a clear correlation between oxygen levels and 3 dominant nematode species. It seems that food competition between these species is avoided, by a different tolerance to lower O<sub>2</sub>-concentrations. At the other station, the food availability is the determining factor for the occurrence of two dominant nematode species. Despite all available ecological data on marine nematodes, their role in sediments still is poorly understood. Studies on feeding behaviour, and experiments with labeled food, can give more insight in the complex trophic strategies of nematodes. There is also need for better methods in quantifying the interactions of nematodes with the lower trophic levels.","AbstractOtherLang":"Onder de titel Meiofauna van de Noordzee: wat, waar, wanneer en waarom? Een veldecologische en experimentele benadering, stelde Tom Moens de eerste resultaten voor van een studie door Maaike Steyaert naar de correlatie tussen de verticale verdeling van nematoden in sedimenten enerzijds, en van de biogeochemische karakteristieken van die sedimenten anderzijds. Twee staalnamepunten langs de Belgische kust werden onder de loep genomen, waarbij in de ene een duidelijke correlatie werd aangetoond tussen de redoxtoestand en de distributie van drie dominante nematodensoorten. Vermoedelijk wordt competitie voor voedsel tussen deze nematoden vermeden door een verschillende tolerantie voor verlaagde O<sub>2</sub>-concentraties. Op de andere staalnameplaats is het voedselaanbod determinant voor het voorkomen van de twee meest abundante nematoden. De spreker toonde evenwel aan dat ondanks de toenemende veldecologische informatie over mariene nematoden, de fundamentele vragen over hun rol in sedimenten grotendeels onbeantwoord blijven. Hij illustreerde hoe, aan de hand van observaties van voedingsgedrag, en van experimenten met gelabeld voedsel, een inzicht kan verkregen worden in de enorme complexiteit van trofische strategieën van mariene nematoden.
